I have two approaches in which to involve the public in mural making.
Using blackboard paint on a smooth wall, paint a chalkboard and then a “sketch” of Albert Einstein. E = mc2 with the caption:  “It’s all relative.”
There may or may not need to be a background, however, a deep universe would enhance the concept of relativity.
Accessible to the public would be chalk so that anyone could add thoughts, prose, poetry, etc.
And then, for fun, in a lower corner, separate from the chalkboard, a realistic-looking dog adding his opinion to a fire hydrant. Or not.
That said, I understand that one of the interested artists, Julie Deery, states:  ‘“ Mosaic is my specialty and I do not mind collaborating with other artists.’” I would suggest a mosaic using an array of black, white and gray tones. After the image is scanned it is pixelated and a map is created for the image. Then divide the map into sections, assign each section to the person or group who then applies tiles to a backing which will be attached to the wall. Middle school and high school students would be encouraged to help. This is another way to involve the public in mural making.
        ART THAT DELIGHTS THE PUBLIC
For years I have made art for myself and for sale. I attended Massachusetts College of Art and Design.  Since sharing the art making process with others was an approach I have  always loved, I chose art educational as my major.  I taught art for 10 years in elementary and high schools and community college.  I traveled Europe seeing every museum I possibly could.
The majority of my work comes from Nature.  I  exaggerate a little in my final rendition of sketches which become Fantasy/Nature composites.  I keep the children in mind.

I have completed 18 murals in 20 years and numerous commissions in portraiture as well.
Also, scenic painting in New Mexico, 1993-1999,
Some fun things along a bike trail next to a river in Kansas=painted pipes to look like fish so that walkers and bikers could have a chuckle.  And, as always, I hope my art delights the public.
Please keep in mind the flexibility of my method(s). Thank you.
